“The essence of faith is fewness of words and abundance of deeds”

- Bahá’u’lláh

Assembly Resources: Secondary

Speech: "A kindly tongue is the lodestone of the hearts of men"

This five-minute presentation, suitable for pupils aged 11-13, explores the power of speech. It urges pupils to think about the effects that their words have on other people, and to try to find positive ways of speaking that lift the hearts of whoever they are with.

Virtues: "Regard man as a mine rich in gems"

The following two presentations, suitable for pupils aged 11-13 and 13-15 respectively, introduce the concept of ‘virtues’. They encourage pupils to reflect on the above quotation, and think about the virtues they would most like to develop in themselves.

Deeds: "Strive that your actions may be beautiful prayers"

The following two presentations, suitable for KS3 and KS4 pupils respectively, illustrate the experience of pilgrimage from a Bahá’í perspective.  If a Bahá’í visitor is giving the presentation, they might talk about their own experience of pilgrimage.  Otherwise the script can be adapted to give a more general outline of what pilgraimge might mean to a Bahá’í.

The KS3 assembly introduces the concept of kindness in words and deeds. The KS4 assembly introduces the concept of service to others as being equivalent to an act of worship.

We all feel the need to belong somewhere, but are the ways in which we are trying to satisfy this need actually bringing us closer together?

Communication is an important building block for society, but often public discourse is divisive and centred around conflict. Is there an alternative?
